Gold Bears - Record Store
The astonishing revival in the fortunes of indie pop has centred on a handful of Stateside record labels.
Founded two decades ago, Slumberland have stood at the epicentre of the explosion as new bands emerge on an almost daily basis. However one of their latest releases has something a little special.
Gold Bears were formed from the ashes of Plastic Mastery, with singer Jeremy Underwood having taken time off to stockpile new material. Recruiting a few close friends, the band quickly bashed out a single for Magic Marker Records.
Rickety indie pop, the seven inch was marked by a sense of urgency and a romantic streak which flooded over the A-side. Heading into a tiny studio to lay down their live set, Gold Bears have emerged with their debut album.
Set to be released later this month, ‘Are You Falling In Love?’ both harks back to classic pop songs whilst at the same time subverting the indie pop format. An eleven song collection, the album rushes by in just 33 minutes with Gold Bears refusing to slow the pace of their shoegaze rush.
By turns funny and bereft, heartbroken and inspired Gold Bears have a youthful innocence which masks a very sincere belief in love.
Taken from their debut album, ‘Record Store’ is an ode to the music geek inside us all.
